The Basics of knocking together an HTML Web Page

Here's how to make the most absolute basic webpage using HTML.
You can do it in Notepad or Wordpad on your PC, or better still a dedicated piece of HTML software such as CoffeeCup HTML Editor (makes it loads easier if you get a scripting error on line such and such)..... though personally I prefer "cheating" with WYSIWYG software such as Netobjects Fusion when I can get away with it.

Anyway, the source code for a basic webpage looks like this:
Code (HTML):
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>This is where the bit it says in the top of the browser what the page is, e.g. Web Design Chit Chat Forums</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
This is the bit where all the stuff that appears on the web page goes.
</BODY>
</HTML>

But things don't stop here, I've yet to show you how to put images, and links & linked images + meta-tags + other stuff in it yet.

This is how to include a linked piece of text in your webpage, it's simply a matter of:
Code (HTML):
<a href="http://www.webdesignchitchat.co.uk">Web Design Chit Chat</a>

So in the webpage it goes like this:
Code (HTML):
<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>This is where the bit it says in the top of the browser what the page is, e.g. Web Design Chit Chat Forums</TITLE>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
<a href="http://www.webdesignchitchat.co.uk">Web Design Chit Chat</a> - In here where the text and stuff that appears on the page goes
</BODY>
</HTML>

Easy, eh?† Cheesy

HTML Documents
All HTML documents must start with a document type declaration: <!DOCTYPE html>.

The HTML document itself begins with <html> and ends with </html>.

The visible part of the HTML document is between <body> and </body>.

HTML Headings
HTML headings are defined with the <h1> to <h6> tags.

<h1> defines the most important heading. <h6> defines the least important heading

HTML Paragraphs
HTML paragraphs are defined with the <p> tag

HTML Links
HTML links are defined with the <a> tag

HTML Images
HTML images are defined with the <img> tag.

The source file (src), alternative text (alt), width, and height are provided as attributes
